lifestyle conventions part 4

yellow: informal
green: direct
Publication: FHM
Issue: February 2005

The standard model “guy” is a pretty straightforward being. When we tell our lady to shut her trap so we can watch some footie, it means just that. There are no hidden messages whatsoever. And it certainly does not mean,Honey, now is the best time to talk about where this relationship is going.” But as we’ve stressed oh-so-many times in the pages of this very magazine, women on the other hand, are not so much into this business of being straightforward. The word “fine” for example, could mean a million and one things, and it is way better to have all your limbs chopped off by a mega-powered chainsaw than have a woman say the dreaded word to you.
So this month if your girl mutters, “We don’t really need to celebrate Valentine’s Day if you don’t want to,” don’t take it as your cue to jump for joy and spend all the cash on Star Wars Lego. Why? Because there is simply no chance in hell that she actually means it, plus it will take you forever to build one stupid Millennium Falcon.
If anything, it’s simply a test to see if you’re really the sensitive and caring dreamboat that you’ve been pretending to be, or if you’re just, well, a guy. So what do you do? If you really dig the chick – and third base is a great possibility – we recommend you sell all your worldly possessions and spend it all on that one special day. And to help your cause, we’ve got some pretty good V-Day gift ideas on pages 98 and 99. After all, third base is a pretty damn good thing.

music video research task

The two music videos i have chosen that shows women in a negative way are robin thicke " i know "you want it" and Pitbull"don't stop the party " both the videos show women dancing for the mens pleasure and shows women in a voyeuristic way. Both videos have girls wearing bikinis and the camera focuses on their bodies encouraging the audience to view women as objects of desire. In pitbulls video many girls are seen in bikinis in different locations like on a yacht and in a swimming pool. The girls are the main focus of the video showing them more than the artist in the video, they blow kisses at the camera and behaving sexually. Robin Thickes video is set in a baseball court where lots of girls dance in the stands and on the court although it is more tame than pitbull's video the women still serve the men in the video.

introduction to lifestyle magazines

The different types of content in magazines such as glamour are mostly adverts and some articles about lifestyles and appearance. Every other page is an advert for perfume of clothes from fashion designers contorting that the magazine is a fashion magazine as much as a lifestyle mag. The articles inside are aimed to relate to women's lifestyles and give tips on how to lose weight or choose what to wear. Some of the articles are about gossip to appeal to women who read the mag. The magazines have articles on health and fashion because men and women care more about their appearance and health.

The layout of each page has a large image of a model or product then with small text at the bottom. The advert pages contain one large image of a model wearing or holding the brands product. The text features questions aimed at the reader questioning the readers lifestyle and style.  The articles images are made the main focus of the reader, the images are there to make the reader want to look like the model and buy the product. The images sometimes are sexual and invite sexual gaze but are never too explicit. The pictures are all mostly of women and show them as desirable. The magazines are aimed at women who want to wear fashionable clothes and wear the correct makeup.

Someone would hope to look as good as the models in the advert by buying the products advertised. Women would want to know what to wear to look good and would buy this product hoping to find this out. People who are want to diet would buy the magazine to get tips on how to lose weight.

homework

The two statements are both true and women in hip hop videos are shown as objects.  The first statement describes the girls as "sexual playthings" this gives a very negative view of the girls in videos but does make a point the girls are shown as items with no personality or individuality. in videos such as "blurred lines" girls are shown dancing for the men and minors next to the artists. The next statement says that the videos give men the impression that women are nothing more than "sex "objects waiting to be used, I don't think that any man knows a women who acts like a video girl. The videos do give a wrong perception of women but men realise they are nothing like real women. the third statement is correct in saying that women are displayed falsely in other media forms, the hip hop's vision of women is not unique and movies sometimes show women as sex objects.

hip hop videos are the worse though because they only show one type of women and give the girls no identity. The videos are wrong when they only show women with large breasts because most women don't have large features and dance around naked. Media uses these stereotypes to increase popularity in adverts, films and television programmes but some do give the girls identity while hip hop does not. "the only version of women available " means the stereotype gives men the impression that all women have large breasts when they do not. The girls in the videos make girls feel unwanted by men because they don't have large bums and breasts to attract men. to conclude the statement are correct but do exaggerate some aspects like the effect the videos have on men.

does hip hop givebthe wrong impression

hip hop videos show men having power over women and owning expensive cars and lots if money. this stereotype is wrong and normal men don't have fast cars and big jewellery yet hip hop make people believe that you need these things to be a real man. Hip hop videos show men having control over women and women almost worshipping the men. The videos all have the same things such as men in fast cars with jewellery and dominating the women and other men giving the viewer the impression that you need to be like this to be a real man.  If men really treated women as they do in the videos then there would nether be any real relationships. The videos impose if you are not like this you are weak and a wimp this makes men feel bad because they don't control women and have fast cars. The videos clearly display and unhealthy take on manhood and power over the opposite sex.

The girls in the video are shown having thin bodies and large breasts which implies that all women should have perfect bodies. the men in the videos only ever look at these girls so girls watching the video will feel that men wouldn't be interested in them. the majority of the world don't have fast cars and lots of girls so the videos are an unrealistic view of masculinity. The artists make their videos like this to make them feel like real men and want viewers to envy their wealth and lifestyle. The girls in the videos are only actresses and models they don't really worship the men in the videos. To conclude the hip hop scene is a very unhealthy and unrealistic view on manhood these videos are wrong and give a negative output. I think these videos should be more realistic and give viewers  better role models.

photoshop evaluation

I like my logo because it shows exactly what the show is about with the hoodie showing the gang culture at the school and the knife showing violence. I got a simple school crest template of Google images and used photo shops free line tool to segment the crest into four sections. I then got images of a hoodie, a knife, a fire and a fist. these images show what kind of a school it is, a school that has violent thugs and frequent disasters like fires. I then used the insert text tool to insert "estate secondary school" at the bottom of the crest. the text font goes with the theme of the show with crooked writing showing a rusty broken school. I then added bullet hole images from Google images and put them about the crests, these show the school has been damaged by violence through the years and has not bothered to repair it. This show the school has not bothered to change the schools awful state. I added a silhouette of a school underlining the school title.

My logo could be better it could have colour to contrast with the silhouetted pictures. the logo could have had more detail and shown that is still a school despite the outrageous nature of the pupils. I could have spent more time editing the images and to fit better in the crest. the image looks a bit plain with no colour, the image could be improved the image with some colour despite the silhouettes are meant to be black and white.

the disclosure album cover has two young children with white lines drawn on their faces creating a smile the boys wear the same colour shirts as trousers. they are both very young and have similar hair style and colour. the connotation is that the white lies are creating another face on top of theirs smiling maybe the music is making them smile with the lines as the music. the two boys look very similar maybe their brothers.

the waterloo road logos made of school desks but the desks are not placed well giving the feeling of an unorganized school the picture also has broken desks so the school is really not the best school you could go to. the logo shows how the school is a failure and has little control.

this picture of a range of characters such as the casual laid back pupil to the clever intelligent pupil with perfect uniform. the picture also shows messy unhappy students who do not care about education. the picture also shows a sad lonely boy with only one friend. the picture clearly shows the popular boy and  the not so popular pupils in the school. the picture shows all different ranges of characters in a school with stereotypes and more complex characters the characters have little similarities all looking different and unique to add variation.

the program is on at eight o'clock on thursdays which is a school day so it tries to appeal to students and  young adults who can relate to the program. the school is shown from the start of the school day to the end so when you watch it its as if that happened today and you are looking at the highlights of their school day. most people watch television at this time so they would put this on so people could catch up on what happened to their favorite characters during the school day.

waterloo road is a school that has little authority and involves teachers who only care about their pay check and students who run wild doing what they want at school from smashing windows to wielding hockey sticks. The school headmaster has lost his mind from the chaos that the school is. the teachers watch all this happen while smoking in the school playground in front of pupils. The corridors are filled with litter and no work displayed on the walls. The students all are walking around in jumpers track suits and no school uniforms. The school is a joke with no authority, no order and no control!
